Serving warrants can be one of the most exciting and adrenaline pumping details that you will perform. While participating in a warrant detail you may be helping to track down a simple “failure to appear’’ subject or someone with multiple felony warrants. One of the most publicized details the Sheriff’s Office will perform is the annual “Dead Beat Parent Roundup” (a.k.a. “Dead Beat Dad Detail” but we are equal opportunity and arrest Moms as well). During the “Dead Beat” detail posse members will be part of an arrest team that will be lead by a Sworn or Reserve deputy. Each team is given a list of several subjects that are woefully behind on their court ordered child support obligations. More often than not, these offenders will owe thousands of dollars in back payments and often have other, much more serious, outstanding criminal warrants. These people are rounded up and shipped off to jail. Bail for these offenders is usually equal to the amount owed in back due child support payments. Although the majority of these offenders are taken into custody without incident, some arrest teams have experienced situations of resisting arrest, foot pursuits, and barricade situations.
A warrants operation called “techno-cops” has been setup and is proving to be one of the most successful warrants details. The public is invited to anonymously provide information on suspected criminals via the Sheriff Office web site. The information is verified by office personnel and then given to a sworn deputy for execution of the warrant. The sworn deputy will then setup an arrest team that can be composed of reserve deputies and posse members. Because the information provided by the public has been so current and accurate our warrants teams have enjoyed a great arrest-to-warrant-served ratio.
Why not go to the web site and check it out? Who knows, you just might find a criminal living near you! http://www.mcso.org/TechnoCops
